2021 Kaden Ambassador Kate BattenUnable to learn to ride a bike by the traditional method of having an adult pushing until you pedal away, Kate taught herself to ride by taking her bike to the top of their sloping lawn and coasting down — until one of those laps included pedaling — and she was off!!

Growing up in rural New Zealand gave her lots of places to bike and in late high school, she realized long distances were her thing — biking 10 miles each way. Since then she has done multiple self-supported long distance rides in Canada, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand and USA — including across the continent. Many of these rides were solo or in the company of other women. She also spent many years leading bike tours in New Zealand and rode a bike at the South Pole, Antarctica.

Kate dabbled briefly in racing — both road and mountain bike and most recently in ultra distance winter fat tire bike races in Alaska. But, as a middle-of-the-pack finisher, she realized touring was really her passion — both for the physical places it takes her and the places she goes in her mind in those many hours on a bike.

She moved to the USA in 1997 and with her American spouse, recently moved from Denali, Alaska to Ely, Minnesota where she is learning all the fat bike trails and looking forward to exploring the area by bike this coming summer.
